New tracks from 2/3/17

New music comes out on Friday these days (used to be Tuesday) and Spotify has a dandy little feature called 'Release Radar' that pulls together tracks from recent releases you might like.

"Never miss a new release! Catch all the latest music from artists you care about, plus new singles picked just for you. Updates every Friday."

Here are some tunes I'm liking from my recent 'Release Radar' batch:

Rap/Hip-hop
Rick Ross, Ty Dolla $ign - I Think She Like Me
Clyde Carson, Mozzy - Bring All Your Friends

Hip Hop
John Robinson - We the Prolific (Feelin Music) (prod. by Chief)
Oddissee - Like Really (Single)

Instrumentals
Karriem Riggins - 4Es'J
Barclay Crenshaw (aka Claude VonStroke) - Respect the Source
Tek.lun - YouNivErsIty

Dance
Moullinex, Tee Flowers - Open House
letherette - Triosys
Mr Beatnick - Church Street Blues

#antitrumpmusic

Piggybacking off of the last post, I'm sharing another Artist Playlist on Spotify. This one's from one of the greatest all around electronic artists of all time in my opinion - Four Tet. It's a playlist consisting of artists that hail from the countries affected by Trump's so-called "Muslim Ban."

And in the spirit of #antitrump music, I came across a mix by Habibi Funk, a"label, dj and platform for funky/soulful and/or psych influenced music from the arab world." I found the mix during a brief surf of my soundcloud news feed via Jakarta Records. They've released music from other artists I like a lot, like Ivan Ave, Suff Daddy, FloFilz, and L'Orange. Anderson .Paak even has a release with the record label from Berlin/Cologne.

Spotify: Artist Playlists

Spotify is my leading choice for streaming music. The catalog is comprehensive, I can split the $15/month subscription six ways with my friends and family, and I enjoy the user experience for the most part. Other platforms are good for exploring new music too, but there's one thing on Spotify I use that I don't find elsewhere, and that's Artist Playlists.

I like these better than the thematic, curated playlists put together by the company itself. They're usually more creative, and it's a unique way of engaging with artists. Influences, favorite current tracks, and travel mixes can all be found in these selections put together on the musician's own profiles.

This is an Artist Playlist from Swedish producer HNNY. He makes electronic dance music for the most part, but this playlist (with a watermelon emoji for the title) is a mix of various genres with generally uplifting and laid back tunes throughout.

I listen to a lot of dance and hip hop, but it's nice to venture into other tastes for a change, and there's no better guide than an artist you already trust.
